(Part of just1word's adventure in News on Taiping and its surrounding)
Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee's mansion in Taiping is well preserved. But many writers seem to omit the life and times of Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee at Larut mines, where he became rich. As a powerful Hai San leader he controlled the mines at Larut and during the Larut Wars which began in 1861, he almost wiped out the Ghee Hin clan from Larut.
The Larut Wars between the Hai San and Ghee Hin went on until 1873. When he lived in Taiping, Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee built a townhouse as his residence. The house has two entrances, with a road on either side, and is standing to this day. After he passed away in 1901, his sons Chung Ah Yong and Chung Thye Phin also became very wealthy.
Ah Yong became the first racehorse owner in Perak and his race course was in Klian Pauh, Taiping. He employed a European trainer for his prize-winning racehorses and maintained his stables at 12,000 Straits dollars a year.
The new owners of Chung Keng Kwee townhouse in Taiping are doing their best to restore the building to its former glory.
